Income Protection: The Cover You Hope You Never Need, Until You Do

Most people insure their home, their car, even their phone, without thinking twice. But when it comes to protecting their income, the thing that pays for everything else, it is often overlooked or pushed into the “I’ll deal with it later” pile.

The reality is simple. If illness or injury stops you from working, your income can disappear very quickly, but your bills do not. Mortgages or rent, groceries, school fees, insurance, and everyday expenses continue regardless of what is happening with your health. That is where income protection plays a vital role.

Many people assume sick leave or annual leave will be enough. That might help for a short period, but it rarely covers anything more serious. Once leave runs out, financial pressure can build fast. For self employed people and business owners, that pressure can start immediately.

Others rely on income protection held inside their superannuation without really understanding it. Default cover is often limited. Benefit amounts may be minimal, payments may only last a couple of years and/or be payable only after four months, and the definitions around being unable to work can be much stricter than expected. Many people only discover these limits when they need to make a claim.

Income protection is not just about replacing income. It is about protecting choices and reducing stress. It gives you time to recover properly rather than forcing a rushed return to work. It also helps protect your family from having to make difficult financial decisions during an already challenging time.

A common concern is cost. Premiums can feel like just another pressure on household cashflow. What many people do not realise is that insurance does not always need to be paid from your everyday bank account. For some, income protection and life insurance can be structured through superannuation, meaning premiums are paid from super rather than household cashflow. This can make it easier to keep important protection in place without adding strain to the family budget.

The key is making sure the cover actually fits your situation. That includes understanding how much it would pay, how long it would pay for, when payments would start, and what conditions are covered.

Income protection is easy to ignore when life is going well. But when it is needed, it can make the difference between financial stability and real stress.
